Danish artist makes giant ceramic for Hanoi
Danish ceramist Michael Geertsen will unveil on April 16 a six-kilometer-long ceramic mosaic made up of many smaller paintings by himself and Vietnamese artists in front of the Long Bien bus station in Hanoi.
He has created it by first making ceramic vases, bowls and plates in all shapes and sizes before cutting them into geometric shapes – arcs, circles, and cylinders – to combining them.
The painting, a reflection on Vietnamese society and lifestyle, is like a big house with many rooms and Mr. Geertsen is in charge of taking viewers room by room.
Created for the “Con duong gom su ven song Hong – ky niem 1000 nam Thang Long Ha Noi” (Ceramic mosaic mural along the banks of the Hong River commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi) project, it will later be hung on the wall of the Hong River dyke.
The project director invited Mr. Geertsen and his fellow Danish ceramist Morten Espersen but the latter did not accept the invitation.
The project began in late February.
“This is an amazing public project. To me, this was a good opportunity and also a big challenge. But the most important thing for me is that I can create an impressive artwork in your country, a place that has a deep and impressive culture”
Mr. Geertsen, 43, graduated from the ceramic and glass department at the Danish School of Art and Design in 1991 and later from Designskole (Institute of Industrial Design) in 1993.
His works have been displayed at museums in New York, London, Demark, Germany, South Korea, China and other countries.
He has won awards from Denmark, Belgium, South Korea, the US, and Germany.
