Color – mixture of painting and photography

With “Color,” the first time Himiko Visual Café had an exhibition that attracted a curious audience who wanted to know more about body art.

40 photo-installation pieces of art are the result of the mixture of photography and painting. Visitors have to open scarves to discover which work is hidden below. It is the photographer, Phan Quang’s, way to make the audience surprised.

At first, Phan Quang planned to portrait the models on their bodies. The artist then had another idea when he worked with colleagues.  Each artist left his/her imprints on their works. All artists and models did not receive any pay. They participated in this event to raise funds for three heart child patients in Binh Dinh province.

“I immediately agreed to join this project when I knew about its purpose. It would be very strange to feel a brush going on your body. I like the idea of drawing a Dong Ho folk painting on the body of a girl with a sad face. It shows something very traditional through a modern and brave style,” said actress Hong Anh, who recently won the Golden Kite Award 2008 for the Best Actress.

Hong Anh had to stand quietly for nine hours to get this painting done.

“Color” is one of several projects by Phan Quang. He said he is working on two long-term documentary photographic projects about immigration (12-15 years) and urban life (7 years).
